All Wet

By News Desk

Tweet The well named Hockeyschtick (did Eli say something about nyms?) has pulled a piece out of either by  Herman Harde.  To set the stage, Harde, of course, is a professor at the Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg, aka the Bundeswehr Univesitaet.  His presence there also is at least a strong clue about who invited Murry Salby to give a talk last year and Harde is a luminary in the German denial of the possibility of really bad climate change group EIKE.   Eli wrote something about this in 2011 when Harde was all the rage, but Ceist has noticed a few things, about the latest, namely that it is spreading like Ebola amongst the blogs of denial of climate change, now known as the blogs of denial of the possibility of really bad climate change, or DPPRBC for short, so Eli thought he would take a look

Zombie Steve and the Hockey Stick

By News Desk

toto said… My understanding is that "short-centering" was actually a bona-fide bug. If you’re computing a covariance matrix by simply multiplying the data with its own inverse, "short-centering" the data around the recent past will produce "fake covariance" of all series with the hockey-stickish series (with a negative sign, but that’s irrelevant). The actual PCs being computed are the same, but the ‘hockey-stickish’ ones now seem to explain much more of the variance – spuriously so.Unfortunately the auditor-in-chief proceeded to introduce a bug of his own, by keeping the same number of PCs as Mann after full-centering the matrix, even though by then you need to include more PCs to capture sufficient variance

Frontiers – The Amway Analogy

By News Desk

Tweet Amway is an American institution, one of the first and most profitable of the multi-level marketing schemes, where what is really being sold is participation in the scheme not so much the products and the focus is on motivation, but not only motivation to sell, motivation to recruit new sales people, and the payoff is a cut of what the new sales people sell as they order through you.  It is not illegal, but MLM exploits the newbies at the bottom who have to buy their stock and are not always able to sell it as explained at the Skeptic’s Dictionary An Amway customer is not just buying a detergent, but is recruited into being a minister of a faith with a complicated bookkeeping scheme.

The Angry Author

By News Desk

Tweet While copy-editing a paper, Eli was looking for the APS (American Physical Society) style manual, but fortunately Google knew better and delivered him to the APS style manual , but a different APS, and not for authors, but instructions to the copy editors, including this gem The Angry Author Sometimes you will encounter an author who, despite best efforts, intractably insists on something outrageous or is just a nasty, hostile person. It happens. The first thing that you should do is keep yourself calm and keep from escalating the situation

Salby and the Bunny

By News Desk

Tweet In the latest rendition of Salby Tunes Eli wandered over to the Scottish Sceptic’s summary of Murry Salby’s talk in Edinburgh.  The Scep did a reasonable job of summarizing the talk, which appears of a piece with Salby’s Hamburg seminar .  That was well shredded by the Weasel in penance for his sins.  Still, there does appear to be something new, Salby is now claiming that the increase in CO 2 mixing ratio is due to thermal decomposition of soils. Eli was feeling obscure at the time so the Bunny inquired Now Eli is but an ‘umble Rabett, innocent as the bunnies of the field, a little bunny foo foo as it were, (fair warning) and it occurs to him that there is a significant indicator of CO2 emission by combustion and not warming, contained in the Keeling curve but not much remarked upon and certainly not mentioned by the Good Dr.
